From Separation to Kinship: Buddhist Practices for Ecological Belonging

From Separation to Kinship: Buddhist Practices for Ecological Belonging, Second Conference on Buddhism and Ecology, organized by Laboratorio Ecobudismo, Fundación Dharma Gaia, and the Ibero-American Network of Buddhism

With a presented by Kaira Jewel Lingo on October 24 at 9 am. Conference starts October 3 and continues to October 24, 2026.

The ecological crisis is not only an environmental crisis but also a crisis of relationship. Many Buddhist teachings point to the roots of this disconnection in the mistaken perception that we exist as separate selves, apart from one another and from the living Earth. This presentation explores how Buddhist practice can help us move from separation to kinship by cultivating a lived experience of interdependence, or interbeing, with the more-than-human world.

Drawing on my experience as faculty with the Buddhist Eco-Chaplaincy Training and as an early contributor to the Kincentric Leadership initiative, I will share contemplative practices and community-based approaches that help participants deepen ecological belonging and translate insight into compassionate action. These include mindfulness practices in nature, kincentric forms of perception and language, place-based contemplative exercises, and communal rituals that invite participants into relationships of reciprocity with the Earth.

The presentation will also reflect on how Buddhist communities can support the inner transformation needed to meet the climate and ecological crises with resilience, imagination, and collective care. Rather than seeing environmental engagement as separate from spiritual practice, I will suggest that remembering our kinship with all life is itself a profound expression of the Buddhist path and an essential foundation for compassionate action in our time.

The conference will be conducted entirely in Spanish, and simultaneous interpretation will be provided throughout the event.
